2. Background (PFOS & PFOA) 2.1. Perfluorooctane sulphonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) are perfluorinated chemicals and commercially available in the form of salts, derivatives and polymers. PFOS has been identified as being persistent, bio -accumulative in the environment and toxic in terms of human health.
It was added to Annex B of the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants in May 2009. Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a group of man-made chemicals that includes PFOA, PFOS, GenX, and many other chemicals. PFAS have been manufactured and used in a variety of industries around the globe, including in the United States since the 1940s. PFOA and PFOS have been the most extensively produced and studied of these chemicals. Exhibit 1: Physical and Chemical Properties of PFOS and PFOA (ATSDR 2015; EFSA 2008; EPA 2016b, 2016c) Property PFOS (Free Acid) PFOA (Free Acid) Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) number 1763-23-1 335-67-1 Physical description (physical state at room temperature and atmospheric pressure) White powder (potassium salt) PFOA and PFOS are no longer manufactured or imported in the United States, but similar “replacement chemicals for PFOA and PFOS such as GenX, may be just as persistent,” Pinney said.
Human exposure to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) is a public health concern that ATSDR, the CDC, and NCEH are helping our local, territorial, tribal, state, and federal partners address. Children with high levels of PFOA and PFOS in their blood produce lower levels of antibodies after vaccination, which could reduce their ability to fight off infections. 3M, the primary manufacturer of PFOS, began a voluntary phase-out of the chemical in 2000.

Perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) is one of a group of related chemicals known as perfluorinated alkylated substances (PFAS). These are also called Proven solutions for effective PFAS removal. Polyfluroalkyl substances, known as PFAS, are man-made chemicals found in Media discussions about perfluor octanesulphonic acid (PFOS), perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorinated surfactants (PFTs) in connection with textile 14 Dec 2018 EFSA described PFOA and PFOS as “man-made chemicals . . . used [these] chemical contaminants to which human humans are exposed 24 Oct 2018 Dietary Exposure to the Environmental Chemical, PFOS on the Diversity of Gut Microbiota, Associated With the Development of Metabolic Learn about PFAS and the water technologies that can filter them. PFAS are a group of man-made chemicals that cause adverse human health effects and A non-fluorinated mist suppressant chemical alternative was found and might be a promising substitute for PFOS.
Perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) is part of the group of Perfluoroalkyl and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFASs) . Click here to learn more about this group of chemicals. Biomonitoring California Information We especially would appreciate the dates for the first-time use of PFOA and PFOS chemicals used in pesticides or as "inerts" - and data that can confirm that the substances used in "inerts" are waste products from the production of these chemicals.
